Network calls

A new report by a network of environmental NGOs has called for a ban on importing of bumblebee colonies for commercial use and demanded an action plan to reduce importing of honeybees, citing disease concerns.

The Coalition’s Policies for report published last week also called for the Government to create a National Pollinator Monitoring Scheme to measure pollinator abundance.

“Existing data tells us nothing about trends in services; information which is key to making better predictions for crop production and management of a healthy ecosystem,” it said.

It also proposed that more pollinator species including be added to Schedule 5 of the & Countryside Act, which lists species that may not be taken, harmed or killed, and urged greater protection within the planning system of brownfield sites of high environmental value.

It also urged a full ban of three currently restricted pesticides to be extended to other crops.
